Wakeboarding Tips

As is expected in one of the most "extreme" sports developed, there is a huge amount of "free style" maneuverability involved in wakeboarding. Individual contestants are constantly seeking that new wakeboarding trick to give their performance a winning edge. In its simplest form, wakeboarding consists of using the wake wave from the towing motor boat as the platform from which a contestant attempts to perform various tricks.

The Raley Maneuver

The most basic maneuver is the simple "raley". This is to come up onto the wave from the inside and jump over it for a landing on the other side of the wave. Points are scored according to how high the leap, or "pop", is achieved. While it is easier to perform by riding on the heel end of the board, a greater height can be gotten by learning to come up to the wave crest with the weight on the front, or "toe", end of the wakeboard.

The Batwing Maneuver

A "batwing" is achieved by holding the board at a 90 degree position from the line of travel when at the top of the jump. An impressive display can be gained using the "butter slide". After the initial "pop", the board is brought down on the wave crest at a sideways angle and the rider will slide along the crest much the same way a skateboarder will do a handrail. The distance one can ride the "butter slide" will determine his standing in the scores.

The Tantrum Maneuver

The "tantrum' is achieved by doing a backflip over the wake after beginning the "pop". A variation of this is called the "Bel Air". It takes practice to perform this backroll flip without using the wave to give you a ramp into the air. Other popular maneuvers are the "whirly bird" in which one will spin 360 degrees while in the air, switching hands on the pull handle and landing back in the position you started from. There are dozens of newly created "traditional" maneuvers for wakeboarding. As the sport continues to grow, there will be many more elaborate tricks attempted to continue pushing it to the limit in competitive play.
